A.L.S. to the Gentlemen of the Committee for the Ball of the American Bachelors. Paris 30 January 1834•  1 page, 4to, with address and Free Frank Signed.

LAFAYETTE PLANS TO ATTEND THE FUNERAL AT WHICH HE CONTRACTED THE ILLNESS WHICH RESULTED IN HIS DEATH FOUR MONTHS LATER. Du Long, a member of the House of Deputies and Minister of Justice died from wounds received in a duel with General Bugeaud on January 29• Lafayette's son had been his second. It was at this funeral that Lafayette contracted the serious bladder ailment which killed him just four months later. He here regrets his inability to attend a Ball. "Amidst the feelings of a double affliction for the loss of a patriotic Colleague and personal friend, I much regret to be deprived. Of the pleasure which I had so fondly anticipated. Nothing but this melancholy event and its circumstances could prevent my enjoying the delight to pass this evening with you and the Happy Collection of American fellow citizens, Ladies and Gentlemen that are to attend your Ball. The president of the House of deputies has postponed his entertainment; I am one of the Committee to prepare the funeral ceremony that is to take place the day after tomorrow. You will do justice to the impossibility I am under to wait upon you this evening and be the interpreter of my sentiments. Most Truly and Affectionately your devoted friend, Lafayette"
