In accordance with an Act of 1784 "providing that all vessels of Fifteen Tons and upwards, should be provided with Registers. Elias Smith of Beverly in the County of Essex ... maketh Oath that the Schooner Chance whereof Jonathan Lovett, 2d is at present Master, being a Square stern'd Vessel of the Burthen of Forty Five Tons, or thereabouts, was built at Almsbury ... 1788. And that Elias Smith is at present owner ... " Large signature boldly penned between two paper seals, "John Hancock." Signed also by ELIAS SMITH; JOHN AVERY JR. as secretary; and JOSEPH BATCHELDER, Naval Officer.
