Autograph letter signed “Edm: Randolph,” 5.5” x 7.75,” Richmond, April 21, 1800, to T. Nelson Jr., Esq. of York Town. Randolph writes regarding the appeal of Nelson vs. Harwood, noting that the matter will not be tried this term as key figures will be absent: “It is very clear to me, that the appeal of Nelson vs. Harwood of Kendal &c will not be tried this term. Mr. Rendelton will not be here: Mr. Camagton goes off next week: and a bare court will not continue long in session.” He continues by asking about scheduling, suggesting the 6th day of the court might be more convenient. Boldly signed at the close, “Edm: Randolph.” The letter shows age toning, scattered staining, including a vertical stain with small paper loss at the fold.
Edmund Randolph (August 10, 1753 – September 12, 1813) was a Founding Father of the United States, attorney, and the seventh Governor of Virginia. As a delegate from Virginia, he attended the Constitutional Convention and helped to create the national constitution while serving on its Committee of Detail. He was appointed the first United States Attorney General by George Washington and subsequently served as the second Secretary of State during the Washington administration.
