John Avery, Jr. (1739-1806) first Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth.(1780-death), copy enitirely in Avery's hand, including the John Hancock signature, as Governor of Massachusetts, naturalizing the following men as citizens of the United States: James Huyman of Rotterdam; James Henry Laugier de Tassy, Seven United Provinces (Netherlands); Samuel Weston, Island of Madeira; John Hicks and Fanny Hicks his daughter, Boston; Frederick William Guyer, Boston; Charles Vaughn, Hallowell County of Lincoln; William Davis, Great Britain, now Windsor, County of Berkshire; James Scobie, now Marblehead; Daniel Wright and Katy his wife, Great Britain, now Salem, County of Essex; Nathaniel Chandler in Petersham. On a single sheet of laid paper, with a watermark, folded in half, an attested True Copy entirely in the hand of John Avery, Jr., including all other signatures, especially John Hancock. Dated March 3, 1789 from the original Act of February 14, 1789. 12" x 17 1/4", in thin lamination.
