Forrest signs a bond as postbellum railroad executive. Confederate general (1821–1877) who earned a reputation as the greatest cavalry officer of the Civil War. A subject of controversy even in his own lifetime, Forrest’s military legacy remains permanently clouded by his prewar career as a millionaire slave trader and, later, his role as first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. Partly printed DS, signed twice “N. B. Forrest,” one page both sides, 16.75 x 20, September 1, 1869. A handsomely engraved (including a vignette of black cotton workers) first mortgage bond for the Selma Marion Memphis Railroad Company in the amount of $1,000. Thirty-three of the coupons remain attached to the lower portion. Forrest has signed as president of the company on both sides of the document. Intersecting folds (pinholes at intersections), a touch of mild wrinkling and toning, and a few small spots of ink erosion, no faults affecting the signature, otherwise fine condition. The signatures are dark and distinct.
