Rare, General McAuliffe Writes Nuts!
This is a very rare signed item by General McAuliffe signed most likely in the 1940's in fountain pen where he added the word "Nuts" underneath his signature! Omar Bradley has also signed the same portion of this thick program cover, which has an embossed portion of a gold eagle on the reverse side. Signatures from McAuliffe where he adds the word associated with his quotation are quite scarce and this is the first we have seen from the 1940's. McAuliffe was the United States Army general who was the acting division commander of the 101st Airborne Division troops defending Bastogne, Belgium, during World War II's Battle of the Bulge. He is famous for his single-word reply of "Nuts!" in response to a German surrender ultimatum. Omar Bradley was a United States Army field commander in North Africa and Europe during World War II, and a General of the Army. From the Normandy landings through the end of the war in Europe, Bradley had command of all U.S. ground forces invading Germany from the west; he ultimately commanded forty-three divisions and 1.3 million men, the largest body of American soldiers ever to serve under a U.S. field commander.
