Rare War-dated ALS signed “Rene,” one page both sides, 7 x 10.25 on Marine stationary showing the famous Marine bull dog mascot watermarked into the paper, Charlton South Carolina, February 4, 1943 (44) with original Transmittal envelope signed R. A. Gagnon U.S.M.C. located at the M.B. Navy Yard South Carolina and dated February 4th, 1944. Almost exactly 1 year before the famous moment of raiding the flag immortalized by Rosenthal. Letter to his future wife Pauline Harris, whom Gagnon refers to as “Kiddo,” in part: “Well here I am again darling I haven’t time to write you long today but I have enough time to tell you is that grand letter you sent me, better send me your phone number as it is only cost about two dollars to call you even if it was 1 million I’d still call you. I sent you a pillowcase from Charleston I hope you like it .I’m glad that you had supper with mom Sunday I know she likes you a lot and she thinks you’re a swell girl. it looks like we’ll be together soon, I guess your prayers must have been answered as I’m still on this side of the ocean. It looks like we’ll be together in March Gagnon adds a postscript at the conclusion. In fine condition.

United States Marine Corps corporal (1925-1979) who participated in the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. He is best remembered for being one of the flag-raisers who helped raise the US flag atop Mount Suribachi on February 23, 1945, one of the most famous photographs in history.
