Ulysses S. Grant, bold autograph signed "U.S. Grant, Maj. Gen. U.S.A.," adding "Nashville, Tenn., March 9th 1864." A choice wartime signature from Grant’s critical Western command period, penned just days before he was promoted to Lieutenant General and given command of all Union armies by President Abraham Lincoln.
The signature, measuring 2" x 4", is matted and framed with a portrait of Grant in uniform, the overall display measuring 10" x 15.5". Accompanied by a Charles Hamilton Autographs certificate of authenticity with red wax seal affixed to the verso, further attesting to the piece’s provenance.
Ulysses S. Grant (April 27, 1822 – July 23, 1885) was an American military officer and politician who served as the 18th president of the United States from 1869 to 1877. As Commanding General, he led the Union Army to victory in the American Civil War in 1865 and thereafter briefly served as U.S. Secretary of War. Later, as president, Grant was an effective civil rights executive who signed the bill that created the Justice Department and worked with Radical Republicans to protect African Americans during Reconstruction.
