THOMAS HART BENTON (1889–1975), the great Regionalist painter. Autograph letter signed on his Kansas City letterhead, March 15 '65, to Leonard: "I received, from different sources, quite a number of copies of your column in the Post... Of course, I'll make a liar out of the both of us but not this spring. As you know I generally show up for the meetings of the American Academy of Arts and Letters but that conflicts this year with a canoe trip which I planned last Autumn... After I get Rita established at Martha's Vineyard, in June, I am returning to the midwest for an expedition up to the headwaters of the Missouri River. With a companion interested in our western history I am going to follow up the trail of Lewis and Clark. The Army Engineers are furnishing transportation, guides etc." Continued on the reverse.
