A small and appealing group relating to two major figures of 20th-century exploration, Richard E. Byrd and Sir Edmund Hillary.
Included is a check signed by Richard E. Byrd, measuring approximately 2.75" x 6.25", completed and endorsed in 1931. Also included is a Richard E. Byrd First Day Cover, postmarked September 14, 1988, honoring Byrd and Antarctic exploration.
Also present is a signed portrait photograph of Sir Edmund Hillary, measuring 3.25" x 4.75", inscribed and signed in ink, and affixed to a larger informational display sheet containing biographical text identifying Hillary as the first man to climb Mount Everest in 1953.
Richard Byrd Jr. (October 25, 1888 – March 11, 1957) was an American naval officer, pioneering aviator, polar explorer, and organizer of polar logistics. Aircraft flights in which he served as a navigator and expedition leader crossed the Atlantic Ocean, a segment of the Arctic Ocean, and a segment of the Antarctic Plateau. He is also known for discovering Mount Sidley, the largest dormant volcano in Antarctica.
Edmund Hillary (20 July 1919 – 11 January 2008) was a New Zealand mountaineer, explorer, and philanthropist. On 29 May 1953, Hillary and Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers confirmed to have reached the summit of Mount Everest. They were part of the ninth British expedition to Everest, led by John Hunt.
