Autograph letter signed by Holmes, 21 Charles Street, Boston, March 10, 1863. Holmes thanks his correspondent for the compliment paid to "Sister Caroline" — his 1861 poem "Brother Jonathan's Lament for Sister Caroline", addressed to secessionist South Carolina — and regrets that "my feather" should have winged a shaft aimed at New England; he sends a copy of his Addresses. Written in the middle of the Civil War, during which Holmes's son, the future Justice, was serving and had been wounded. Condition: folds, light toning.
