MARTI JOSE: (1853-1895) Cuban Poet, Writer and Revolutionary Philosopher. Martí is considered a national hero as well as a leading figure in Latin American literature. He became a symbol for Cuba's fight for independence in the 19th century, and is referred to as the ''Apostle of Cuban Independence''. A rare and attractive L.S., `Jose Marti´, two pages, folio, New York, 27 January 1895, in Spanish. The partially printed document bears the printed heading of the Delegation of the Cuban Revolutionary party in New York, a printed coat of arms to the heading and a blind embossed seal of the Cuban Revolutionary party to the upper left corner. Marti writes a patriotic statement with two parts, the first entitled `Objeto de la Revolución´ (''Purpose of the Revolution''), stating in part `Los Cubanos tienen valor y un carácter maduro respetable y capaz de autogobernarse con los abundantes recursos de la isla, una vez que esta obtenga esa paz en la cual la dignidad del hombre…´ (''Cubans have courage and a respectable mature character and are capable of self-government with the abundant resources of the island, once this one obtains that peace in which the dignity of man...'') The second part of Marti´s letter is entitled `Razones para la revuelta´ (''Reasons for the Revolt''), and states again in part `Con el placer del sacrificio y con la solemne determinación de pelear hasta la Muerte si fuera necesario, se ha levantado Cuba. Ha tomado las armas..´ (''With the pleasure of the sacrifice accomplished and with the solemn determination to fight till the death if necessary, Cuba has risen up. It has taken up arms…'') The present document is signed by Marti in his capacity as delegate of the Cuban revolutionary party, only few months before being killed during the battle of Dos Rios. Remnants of a former red wax seal to the verso. Overall age wear, mostly to edges with edges slightly trimmed.
