Scarce ALS as president, signed “Bill,” one page, 6.75 x 8.75, White House letterhead, October 7, [1993]. Handwritten letter to celebrity couple Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, in full: "Thanks for your note about our health care speech—it was a big part of why I wanted to be president. Come see us." In fine condition, with a block of light toning to the right side.

President Clinton had given a major health care speech to a joint session of Congress on September 22, 1993, introducing a progressive healthcare reform package. In that speech, Clinton explained: 'Millions of Americans are just a pink slip away from losing their health insurance, and one serious illness away from losing all their savings. Millions more are locked into the jobs they have now just because they or someone in their family has once been sick and they have what is called the preexisting condition. And on any given day, over 37 million Americans—most of them working people and their little children—have no health insurance at all. And in spite of all this, our medical bills are growing at over twice the rate of inflation, and the United States spends over a third more of its income on health care than any other nation on Earth.' Clinton's plan for universal healthcare was ultimately defeated in Congress.

Bill Clinton (born August 19, 1946) is an American lawyer and politician who served as the 42nd president of the United States from 1993 to 2001. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as governor of Arkansas from 1979 to 1981 and again from 1983 to 1992. Clinton, whose policies reflected a centrist "Third Way" political philosophy, became known as a New Democrat.
