RARE Autograph and Book Auction October 17th

PATTON, GEORGE SMITH. JR., 1885-1945. A single-sheet, three-page autograph letter signed "George Patton," to his father, George Smith Patton, II, on West Point stationery. With original envelope addressed in Patton's hand, stamped and franked 1908. 6 3/4" x 5 1/4"; 10 5/8" x 6 3/4" opened. Patton writes to "Papa" of his life at West Point, including the girl he asked to the hop, Kate Fowler, Aunt Mamie's opinion of her worth, and he twice mentions "B[ea?]". He goes on to observe: "There are three officers on the post with auto mobiles and each of them got it for marrying a rich girl so it is clearly up to me." Condition: the letter in very good condition overall, with a few spots of soiling; the envelope with soiling/staining, and a ballpoint pen note about the worth of "Bea" in a different/later hand. Provenance: Private Collection; acquired from Stanley Gibbons, Guernsey, 2007.
