Revolutionary Era Grease lamp. Illumination in the 18th century was woefully inadequate and did little beyond dispelling darkness from a room or unfamiliar path. The least light and the most smoke were given off by grease lamps. Wicks were inserted into grease or oil and when lit served at best to outline objects in a room or tent.
