Hughes, Charles Evans – Signed card (2.25 x 3.75) autograph inscribed “Sincerely yours Charles E. Hughes.” Card bears printed logo “AUTOGRAPH” in upper left corner. Hughes was a lawyer, statesman and Republican politician from New York. He was Governor of New York (1907-1910); Associate Justice of the Supreme Court (1910-1916); U.S. Secretary of State (1921-1925) and Chief Justice of the U.S. (1930-1941). Conkling, Roscoe – Autograph letter signed (5 x 8) on letterhead of Law Office of Roscoe Conkling, dated November 4, 1882. letter is written to a gentleman in Virginia seeking to engage Conkling to represent him in a case in Washington. Conkling writes: “the only objection to undertaking your case is that being already provided with counsel and competent counsel, I doubt if you can afford to pay me for going to Washington and arguing the case having first studied and prepared it. I should be compelled to require a retainer, and fair compensation for the services and my belief is that Mr. Coleman will present your case ably and fully.” Conkling was a well-respected lawyer and is the last person to refuse a U.S. Supreme Court appointment after he had been confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
