Madame! I regret not being able to comply with the desires expressed in your most welcome letter of December 2.
What you ask of me is counter to the habits I have imposed on myself for so many years, which I cannot nor must I now relinquish.
My wife, retired from the stage for a long time now, wishes to stay away from things that have no bearing on her present domestic life and, as beloved as you are, thanking you for my wife as well for the honour that you meant to bestow on us, I beg you to accept the apologies of one who is pleased to call himself Your Most Devoted G.Verdi. In good condition some water staining to bottom of letter which does affect 2 lines of writing, but signature is bold with no issues.
