American statesman (1745–1829) who served variously as President of the Continental Congress, diplomat, and, from 1789 to 1795, first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Partly-printed DS, one page, 15.25 x 9.5, May 1798. Jay appoints Jeptha Lee to Ensign. Please note some condition issues, small tears professionally repaired and couple spots where paper replaced, does not affect signature in anyway.
