Secretary of War Judah P. Benjamin Military Appointment Signed "J. P. Benjamin." One partially printed page, 8.25" x 10.5" (sight), Richmond, December 31, 1861, appointing James H. Holman " ... Lieut Colonel 1st Tenn Regt PA In the Provisional Army in the service of the Confederate States." Soiling at the upper left comer; light water staining at the edges and along the folds resulting is some loss of text and paper. Matted with a photograph purported to be Benjamin to an overall size of 24.5" x 19".
James H. Holman (1836-1910) served throughout the war in the 1st Tennessee and with the Confederate Inspector General Department. He was wounded at Winchester, Tennessee, in 1863 and served a year as a prisoner of war at Johnson's Island, Ohio. He was exchanged in 1864.
