Dated August 10, 1790, written to David Stuart concerning a request for information. Written and signed by John Marshall. The contents read "Dear Sir, I have written an letter of enquiry concerning your business in the Prince Edward district & on receiving an answer will immediately communicate to you what information may be given me. Very respectfully, Always your obedient J. Marshall". John Marshall served in the Revolutionary War with George Washington and spent the winter at Valley Forge. After the war he served in the Virginia Convention where he fought to ratify the Constitution, served as a Congressman for Virginia, and briefly served as Secretary of State before becoming one of the most influential Chief Justices of the Supreme Court in U.S. history. Together with a hand tinted engraving of Marshall published by Johnson, Fry & Company Publishers.Toning, staining, creasing, minor losses, one 1 1/2" tear as well as a few small tears. 12" x 7 1/2" when unfolded. The engraving is 9 1/2" x 6 1/2"
