Handwritten letter by Colby on the Nebraska Woman Suffrage Association Stationary dated April 12, 1881. The ALS form Colby is to another writer, Mary V. Burke about the suffragette movement. Letter in part states... I am glad to know that there are some wide-awake suffragettes in Furnas & Gosper counties. The hon. R. W. Montgomery was a good friend to the amendment in the legislation and I think assisted to start an organization. The letter goes on to say that she could use articles form the pioneer and basically about their cause. Letter in good condition does have a tear about a 1.5 into the bottom does not affect signature but does protrude into some of the words, otherwise fine condition.

Clara Bewick Colby, Nebraska's most prominent suffragist, was a newspaper editor and lecturer whose personal commitment to equal rights resulted in a national career and an international reputation. In 1881 she was one of the organizers of the Women's State Suffrage Association in Nebraska and served as its president from 1885 to 1898. In 1883 she became the editor and publisher of the Woman's Tribune, a national suffrage newspaper she created to bring events and perspectives to readers in isolated locations. It was the first daily paper for women and had been edited and published by a woman. In 1889 Colby received the first press correspondent's pass issued to a woman to cover the Spanish- American War
