This letter refers to the famous argument and letters between Scott and Jackson. During 1817-1818 Scott had written letters questioning Jackson’s military conduct in reference to who he had fought on the plains of Chippewa and New Orleans. This famous correspondence was subsequently printed in a pamphlet and at one point had almost escalated in a duel between Scott and Jackson. In this letter Scott questions the Brigadier General Jessup weather he was on his side or had denounced him. He goes into detail about what he heard and about the long relationship he has with Jessup.

Richmond, Jan. 20th 1819.

Dear General,

Letter in part “……….My friend Edwin Coles, on a later visits to Mr. Madison, and met with Lieut Taylor, sometime aide de camp to Major General Jackson. Lieutenant T represents that You have denounced me (I think that is the phrase)for refused to fight General J. now, that you might, if my place, have acted differently under the provocation of General J’s last letter to me (which I believe you have seen) is probable enough, and it is not at all unlikely that you may have said so much. But that you have denounced me, that is spoken with unkindness or hostility towards me, on any ground whatever, I cannot and will not believe, on any authority less than your own, which a recollection shall remain of the private friendship that has existed between us cemented by the common services, dangers and sufferings through which we have passed. I have therefore not hesitated to contradict the statements of Lieutenant Taylor, and remain ,

Yrs!  as heretofore,
Winfield Scott
