"HAP" ARNOLD’S GENERAL PASS TO THE QUEBEC CONFERENCE.
Document Signed (“H.H. Arnold”), 1 p, on cardstock, 2¾ by 4½ inches, Quebec, [August], 1943, “Quebec Conference 1943 General Pass … No. 4,” with stamped signature of S.T. Wood, Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and with stamped imprint of Herbert H. Smellie, Captain, C.M.P. to verso, some toning and soiling to card, ink mark to left margin, otherwise fine.
A remarkable souvenir from one of the most momentous of the Allied conferences during World War II. The Quebec Conference, code name Quadrant, was held August 17 to 24, 1943, at the Hotel Frontenac in Quebec City, Canada. Roosevelt, Churchill, and Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King met to finalize plans for an allied invasion of Europe, setting a date for May of 1944. They also agreed to increase the bombing offensive against Germany, to build up the U.S. presence in Britain prior to D-Day, and to condemn the German atrocities in Poland. In addition, Roosevelt and Churchill secretly signed an agreement to share nuclear technology between their respective nations. Army Air Corp General Hap Arnold was an important participant at the Quebec conference, overseeing the development of the Allied air strategy in Europe and Asia.
