Sprigg, governor of Maryland, ALS from Annapolis Dec. 15, 1821. This is a historic content letter written to His Excellency, the Governor of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on behalf of Capt. Adam Showers. Showers has been charged by Pennsylvania with kidnapping but can show his absolute right of property in and to the Negro alleged to have been thus taken.” He states that Showers is a member of the Maryland House of Delegates and is respectable and trustworthy. The letter deals with the issue of a fugitive slave long before the Fugitive Slave Act added to the nation’s divisiveness.
