Autograph letter signed by John B. Floyd as Secretary of War, one page, 5" x 6.75", dated September 9, 1858, written from the War Department in Washington. Addressed to J. Apoleon Cheney, Floyd acknowledges receipt of Cheney’s letter and expresses his gratification at the recipient’s interest in the various explorations being conducted under the direction of the War Department. Penned in a neat hand and signed at the conclusion “John B. Floyd.” Light toning and intersecting folds, with minor edge wear, overall well preserved.
John B. Floyd (June 1, 1806 – August 26, 1863) was an American politician who served as the 31st Governor of Virginia. Under president James Buchanan, he also served as the U.S. Secretary of War from 1857 to 1860. Floyd is also known as the Confederate general in the American Civil War who lost the crucial Battle of Fort Donelson.
