War Department, December 17, 1814. Partly printed letter signed “Jas Monroe” as Secretary of War, one page, 8 x 10 in., to Captain Levi Powers of the Thirty-First Regiment of Infantry.

The document formally notifies Captain Powers that, by order of the President and with the advice and consent of the Senate, he has been promoted to the rank of Captain, to take effect from January 11, 1814. Signed clearly at the conclusion by Monroe in his capacity as Secretary of War, a position he briefly held during the War of 1812 while simultaneously serving as Secretary of State.

Moderate staining and general toning with fold lines and light edge wear; overall fine condition with a bold signature.
