Partly-printed document signed by James Madison as President, 8" x 12.75", Washington, June 18, 1812, appointing William Nicholson as a Midshipman in the United States Navy. Countersigned by Secretary of the Navy Paul Hamilton, with the embossed paper seal of the United States affixed at upper left.

This appointment bears extraordinary historical significance, dated the very day the United States formally declared war on Great Britain, marking the beginning of the War of 1812. As Commander-in-Chief, Madison’s appointment of a young naval officer on this pivotal date directly reflects the urgent expansion of the U.S. Navy on the eve of conflict.

Signed “James Madison” at lower right, with strong countersignature of Hamilton.

Light toning and scattered foxing, small stains at lower center, and expected folds. Ink of Madison’s signature is somewhat faded but still legible. Embossed seal remains present and well-defined.

James Madison (March 16, 1751 – June 28, 1836) was an American statesman, diplomat, and Founding Father who served as the fourth president of the United States from 1809 to 1817. Madison was popularly acclaimed as the "Father of the Constitution" for his pivotal role in drafting and promoting the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights.
