He is under obligation for Norris’ support and friendship and will be most willing to repay should the opportunity offer. He is grateful for the support of his numerous devoted friends throughout the Gibraltar of Democracy in Virginia. On the verso President Buchanan has written this note. “Mr. Norris worked as a clerk in the State Department when I was Secretary and I was much pleased with him both 6 as a clerk and a gentleman. I entertain for him a warm and grateful regard as the within letter indicates. James Buchanan 3 June 1857.”
