Horace Greeley handwritten letter signed, 2 pages, 5" x 8", on “Office of The Tribune” letterhead, New York, August 13, 1862. In this Civil War–dated letter, Greeley writes to Adjutant General Thomas A. Hillhouse of Albany, advocating on behalf of a young officer, Alexander Van Tyne, recently appointed a lieutenant in the 5th New York Volunteers (Duryea’s Zouaves). Greeley explains that Van Tyne had been severely wounded by a spent ball in the breast during battle and unfairly discharged due to his injuries, despite his gallantry. Greeley urges that “justice be done” and that Van Tyne be restored to his rightful position, noting that his original appointment had come directly from Governor Morgan. Boldly signed at the conclusion, “Horace Greeley.”

Long active in politics, he served briefly as a congressman from New York and was the unsuccessful candidate of the new Liberal Republican Party in the 1872 presidential election against incumbent President Ulysses S. Grant, who won by a landslide.
