The letter is written on Helmut G. Heinrich, Dr. Ing. Professor Of Aeronautical Engineering University Of Minnesota stationery. Dated October 9, 1964. The letter refers to a presentation he did in West Berlin about what is important to him, "helping mankind in something that has never been done before" boldly signed in ink, an uncommon signature related to helping with creating the parachutes to work with the NASA Space Missions.
Helumt G. Heinrich [1910 1979] was an internationally recognized expert in aeronautical engineering and a specialist in aeronautical deceleration and supersonic parachute design. Born in Germany, his first appointment was as a project engineer at the Graf Zeppelin Research Institution in Stuttgart, Germany were he served throughout World War II. In 1946, he came to the United States as part of the U.S Department of Defense's program to recruit German scientists and was assigned as an advisor to the Parachute Branch of the Equipment Laboratory at the Wright Air Development Center, at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. In 1956, he served as a professor of aeronautical engineering in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics in the Institute of Technology were he was awarded numerous government grants to fund the design of parachutes for NASA's Gemini space capsule and for the Viking program that sent two probes to the surface of Mars. Heinrich was also the author of 130 publications and was awarded all of the highest honors of his field.
