Autograph letter signed “H. Hamlin,” 4.75” x 7.25,” Washington, January 28, 1862, to T. A. Cheney, Esq., acknowledging receipt of a letter and reporting on the business of the Regents of the Smithsonian Institution, noting that the only recent meeting lacked a quorum, that the past year’s accounts were before the auditing committee, and promising to present Cheney’s matter at the next meeting. The sheet shows only light toning and expected folds.

Hannibal Hamlin (August 27, 1809 – July 4, 1891) was an American politician and diplomat who was the 15th vice president of the United States, serving from 1861 to 1865, during President Abraham Lincoln's first term. He was the first Republican vice president.
