Portrait of Rossini, (29 February 1792 – 13 November 1868) an Italian composer who gained fame for his 39 operas, although he also wrote many songs, some chamber music and piano pieces, and some sacred music. He set new standards for both comic and serious opera before retiring from large-scale composition while still in his thirties, at the height of his popularity.,
large photograph of Rossini mounted on engraved sheet, published by Galerie Contemporaine, 13"h x 9.256"w (sight), 21.75"h x 17.75"w (frame).
The photographe Etienne Carjat began to photograph about 1855. Six years later, he opened a Paris studio and began receiving recognition for his portraits: an honorable mention in a London salon (1862), awards in Paris (1863-1864), Berlin (1867), and at the Paris Exposition Universelle (1867). In the best portraits, for example those of Charles Baudelaire and Gioacchino Rossini, the dramatic posture and expression alone convey the portraitist's interpretation.
