Autograph letter signed “Elliott Roosevelt,” two pages on a single 5.5" x 8.5" bifolium, New York, January 5, 1883, on the letterhead of Robinson, Russell & Roosevelt. Roosevelt writes to Charles L. Woodward with instructions regarding subscriptions to Miles Register, requesting that the copies “be sent to my brother, Mr. Theo. Roosevelt – No. 55 West 45th St – and let me have the account at my office.” Boldly signed at the conclusion, “Elliott Roosevelt.”

A significant Roosevelt family letter, linking Elliott Roosevelt, father of future First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, with his brother Theodore Roosevelt, then a 24-year-old rising figure in New York politics, months away from his appointment as U.S. Civil Service Commissioner by President Chester A. Arthur. A scarce early family reference to Theodore Roosevelt, well before his presidency. Light toning and expected folds, otherwise well preserved.

Elliott Roosevelt Sr. (February 28, 1860 – August 14, 1894) was an American socialite. He was the father of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt (1884 –1962) and the younger brother of Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919), the 26th president of the United States. Elliott and Theodore were of the Oyster Bay Roosevelts; Eleanor later married her Hyde Park distant cousin Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882–1945), the 32nd President.
