In order to reduce waste and to profit from left over sand in his iron ore milling process, Edison founded the Edison Portland Cement Company. He believed concrete was the "building material of the future," and attempted to create affordable cement houses for working class families. Even though his endeavors did not advance beyond the prototype stage, his associates and former employees used his ideas to build numerous workers housing projects in the U.S. and in Europe including Yankee Stadium. Like thousands of other business, The Great Depression bankrupted the company. It closed in 1920s.
