Diego Rivera (1886-1957), the Mexican muralist whose monumental frescoes of labor, history, and revolution made him one of the most politically charged and publicly celebrated artists of the 20th century, signed and inscribed this large-format photograph of one of his market murals. The B&W photograph documents a sweeping fresco depicting a crowded Mexican market scene flanked by an arched doorway, the composition teeming with figures, stalls, and produce. At lower right, Rivera has written in blue ink: "To Miss G. Jones / Diego Rivera. 1934."
The year 1934 was a tumultuous one for Rivera: he had just returned to Mexico after the destruction of his Rockefeller Center mural in New York, one of the defining controversies of 20th-century public art. Inscribed Rivera photographs are considerably scarcer than simple signatures and are eagerly sought by collectors of Latin American art and Mexican modernism.
Signed and inscribed B&W photograph, blue ink, approximately 9.5 x 7.5 inches, dated 1934, inscribed to Miss G. Jones (IMG_228.jpg). Minor handling wear and light toning at borders; image strong; overall very good condition. Estimate: $2,000-$3,500.
