Ejército Libertador de Cuba, extraordinary wartime commission signed by both Máximo Gómez as General en Jefe and Calixto García as Major General, Chief of the Eastern Military Department, dated November 30, 1896, from the rebel headquarters at La Yaya. The document promotes Alférez Luis M. Silva to the rank of Lieutenant in recognition of his merits and services to the cause of Cuban independence. Beautifully penned in Spanish on official army stationery, the document bears García’s bold signature at the conclusion and Gómez’s approving signature beneath the notation “Aprobado, El Gral. en Jefe, M. Gómez.”
This commission emerges from one of the most pivotal moments of the Cuban War of Independence, issued from La Yaya, the stronghold that would later serve as the site of the famed 1897 La Yaya Constitution. Jointly signed by the two greatest leaders of the Cuban Liberation Army, it embodies the spirit of the struggle that culminated in the Spanish-American War and Cuba’s eventual independence. Document measures approximately 8.5" x 12". Expected toning and folds, otherwise fine condition.
