Manuscript document signed by Nath. Ellmaker as Captain, C.S., one page, 8.5" x 13", Cochran’s Bridge, Maryland, September 1862. Official printed and manuscript “Abstract of Provisions Sold to Officers” covering sales from September 1–30, 1862. The detailed subsistence report itemizes quantities of fresh beef (440 lbs), ham (81½ lbs), flour (3 barrels), coffee (150 lbs), tea (38 lbs), sugar (536 lbs), adamantine candles (60 lbs), onions, cabbage, and other staples supplied to Confederate officers, totaling $290.63½. Signed at conclusion by Capt. Nath. Ellmaker, C.S., and certified by Brig. Gen. John Cochrane.

Dated the very month of the Maryland Campaign and the Battle of Antietam, this document offers a scarce logistical snapshot of Confederate officer provisioning while operating on Northern soil during Lee’s 1862 invasion. Campaign-period Confederate administrative records are considerably less common than standard correspondence, and examples tied to September 1862 Maryland operations are especially desirable. In very good condition, with expected folds and light toning from field use.

John Cochrane (August 27, 1813 – February 7, 1898) was an American lawyer, soldier, and politician from New York. He was a U.S. representative, the New York attorney general, and a Union Army general.
