ANATOLE FRANCE (1844-1924), Nobel Prize in Literature 1921, who returned his Legion of Honour in protest at Zola's conviction. ALS, 2 pages, 8 October [1898?], on Domaine de Caillavet, Langoiran (Gironde) letterhead, to "mon cher sénateur" [Louis Delpech], with original envelope postmarked Langoiran. Translation: "Forgive me, my dear senator, for not answering your interesting letter in time to save you a needless journey. But I am in the Gironde and only received your letter last night. The project you intend to communicate to me interests me very keenly. I shall come to see you as soon as I return to Paris, that is in a fortnight. Believe, my dear senator, in all my sympathy and my admiration for your energetic and frank attitude in a time of lies and cowardice. I shake your hand cordially. Anatole France."
