Ambrose Burnside Union general and onetime commander of the Army of the Potomac (1824–1881); the distinctive whiskers he sported gave rise to the word ‘sideburns.’ War-dated ALS signed “A. E. Burnside,” one page, 7.7 x 7.75Office of the Illinois Central Rail Road Company letterhead, August 25th, 1865. The letter is reference to Railroad bonds and just after the end of the war. Interesting piece. Matted with engraving of Burnside.
