Abraham Lincoln signed Civil War military commission as President, countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, dated April 1, 1864. The document is an appointment for Samuel Smith as Second Lieutenant of the 5th Regiment of Artillery, dated October 31st, 1863 The vellum document, measuring 15.5" x 19.5" and handsomely framed with portrait to 36" x 36.25", features the bold eagle and military motif at top and bottom. Issued at the height of the Civil War, just as Ulysses S. Grant prepared to open the Overland Campaign, the commission appoints a Union officer to rank, “to serve during the pleasure of the President of the United States.” Lincoln’s signature appears prominently at the lower center beside that of Stanton. Light toning and expected folds with both signatures bold and highly legible.

Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809 – April 15, 1865) was an American lawyer, politician, and statesman who served as the 16th president of the United States from 1861 until his assassination in 1865. Lincoln led the Union through the American Civil War to defend the nation as a constitutional union and succeeded in defeating the insurgent Confederacy, abolishing slavery, expanding the power of the federal government, and modernizing the U.S. economy.
