A group of 2 related pieces – 20th-Century British Novelists & Playwrights. (1) William Golding Autograph Letter Signed, Tullimaar, Truro, 26 May 1988, Sending a Gift After "a Great Stroke of Luck", Nobel Laureate, Author of "Lord of the Flies". Autograph letter signed "William Golding" in blue ink, one full page on his printed Tullimaar, Perran Ar Worthal, Truro, Cornwall letterhead, dated 26/5/88, to Pauline. A warm and generous personal letter: "What extremely bad luck for you both. I should have thought the years of your disability would make the rating authorities more kindly disposed. We have had a great stroke of luck, not a normal occurrence! But my wife and I think it would be reasonable to offer you a little something towards the installation of the phone. I hope you won't refuse it, and I hope you won't think me discourteous when I say that the occasion is unique! So I enclose our thanks-offering. Please don't send any more stamps; it worries my wife to think of you taking on an extra expense. I am allowed stamps off income tax anyway, I discover." Golding, author of "Lord of the Flies" and "Rites of Passage", won the Booker Prize in 1980 and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1983. Fully handwritten letters by Golding are scarce. Condition: horizontal folds; otherwise clean. (2) Iris Murdoch Signed Photograph by a Window, Booker Prize-Winning Novelist and Philosopher, Author of "The Sea, the Sea". Black and white photograph of Dame Iris Murdoch standing by a window with arms folded, wearing a roll-neck under a checked V-neck cardigan, signed "Iris Murdoch" in blue ink across the image. Murdoch wrote 26 novels, including "Under the Net", "The Bell" and the Booker Prize-winning "The Sea, the Sea" (1978), and was an important moral philosopher at Oxford. Condition: clean, with light handling. This item will be accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity from One of a Kind Collectibles.
