Zachary Taylor signed naval appointment, dated April 10, 1849, appointing an officer to the United States Navy. Handsome partly-printed vellum document, measuring 15" x 18", signed “Z. Taylor” as President at lower right and countersigned by William Ballard Preston, Secretary of the Navy.

Finely engraved with a spread-winged eagle at top and a detailed maritime vignette at bottom depicting Neptune and sea nymphs amid naval instruments and ships, with the large embossed paper seal of the Navy affixed at lower center.

Issued at Washington in the first weeks of Taylor’s presidency, the document appoints an officer in recognition of “patriotism, valor, fidelity, and abilities” in service to the United States.

In good to very good condition overall, with intersecting folds, moderate toning, and light edge wear; the embossed seal remains partially intact. Taylor’s distinctive “Z. Taylor” signature is clearly visible. A desirable and early presidential commission from his brief administration.

Zachary Taylor (November 24, 1784 – July 9, 1850) was an American military leader who served as the 12th president of the United States from 1849 until his death in 1850. Taylor was a career officer in the United States Army, rising to the rank of major general and becoming a national hero for his victories in the Mexican–American War. As a result, he won election to the White House despite his vague political beliefs. His top priority as president was to preserve the Union.
