Historic bank check from The Winters National Bank of Dayton, Ohio, dated December 6, 1909, made payable to H. A. Toulmin for $788.75, boldly signed in full “Wright Brothers” and additionally initialed “W.W.” by Wilbur Wright in the lower right corner. The check is made out to Henry A. Toulmin, the Wright brothers’ influential patent attorney, who was instrumental in securing their groundbreaking 1906 patent for flight control—arguably the single most important development in the realization of powered flight.

By late 1909, the Wright brothers were deeply involved in defending their patent rights and expanding their aviation enterprise both in the United States and abroad. This check likely relates to legal services rendered by Toulmin in one of the many international patent defense efforts that followed their early success.
