An appealing assemblage of autographs representing more than a century of American political life, featuring notable figures from the early Republic through the mid-20th century.
Highlights include a desirable dual-signed clipped sheet by Thomas Jefferson Rusk (1803–1857), Texas Revolution hero, signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, first Secretary of War of the Republic of Texas, and later U.S. Senator from Texas (1846–1857), together with James Cooper (1810–1863), distinguished U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania and Union general during the Civil War.
Also included is a charming autograph note signed by Rufus Choate (1799–1859), the famed lawyer, orator, and U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, who writes in his hand, “Please admit the bearer to my lecture,” signed boldly beneath.
Completing the grouping are 20th-century political autographs from Frank F. Merriam, Governor of California (1934–1939), and Edwin B. Dooley, U.S. Representative from New York (1957–1969), featuring Merriam’s signed calling card with embossed state seal, and a National Gallery of Art admission card signed by Dooley, dated February 9, 1957.
A fine cross-section of American statesmanship from the early frontier and Civil War eras through the modern political age—ideal for the collector of U.S. political history.
