Exceptional and large-format signed photograph of Morrison R. Waite (1816–1888), the seventh Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, serving from 1874 until his death in 1888. This striking mammoth-plate albumen photograph shows Waite seated in formal attire, gazing confidently toward the viewer. The image is crisp and richly toned, with superb contrast.
Boldly inscribed and signed in ink below the image: "Truly Yrs, M.R. Waite" and further inscribed, “Presented to T. Apoleon Cheney, L.L.D. Sept. 10, 1874. Toledo Ohio
Photographed by Landy, with imprints “LANDY, PHOTO.” at lower left and “CINCINNATI, O.” at lower right. Image measures approximately 13" x 10.5" on a 16.75" x 21.5" mount. Light edge wear and minor staining to the mount, as typical with photographs of this age and size, but overall very well preserved and visually striking.
An extremely scarce signed image of a sitting Chief Justice, particularly desirable in this impressive oversized format.
