Paul Signac Autograph Letter Signed on Societe des Artistes Independants Letterhead, Writing from St. Tropez
Paul Signac (1863-1935), the Neo-Impressionist master who codified the Pointillist technique alongside Georges Seurat and served for decades as president of the Societe des Artistes Independants, writes on the society's official letterhead. The text reads: "Cher Monsieur. S'il s'agit d'une simple adhesion a un memoire par vous redige, je vous l'adresse, ici, de grand coeur; s'il s'agit d'un sentiment personnel que je crois exprimer en quelques lignes, veuillez m'en aviser. Croyez cher Monsieur, aux parfaits sentiments de confraternite artistique. / Paul Signac / St. Tropez, Var." In English: if it is simply a matter of signing a petition he sends it gladly; if a personal statement is needed, please advise — closing with "feelings of perfect artistic brotherhood."
St. Tropez, where Signac settled in 1892 and which he introduced to the broader art world, gives the letter added biographical resonance. His role as president of the Independants made him a central organizing figure in the Parisian avant-garde.
