An exceptional 23.5" x45" and monumental Founding-era vellum indenture and release conveying approximately 174,428 acres of land, executed 1793–1794, involving vast tracts in South Carolina and formally authenticated by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The document records the conveyance from John Hall and Eliza Ann Hall to Robert Morris, Jr., Esquire, and includes a separate sworn release of dower by Eliza Ann Hall, in accordance with 18th-century legal requirements. This extraordinary instrument is signed twice in bold hand by Thomas Mifflin, Governor of Pennsylvania, and further authenticated by Thomas McKean, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and Alexander J. Dallas, Secretary of the Commonwealth, who signs twice. The document retains multiple original red wax seals with ribbon attachments and starburst paper backings, underscoring its formal execution at the highest governmental and judicial levels. At over 174,000 acres, the scale of this conveyance places it among the largest private land transactions of the early American Republic and reflects the immense speculative land activity associated with the Morris family following the Revolutionary War. A visually commanding and historically significant artifact combining executive, judicial, and administrative authority in a single vellum document.
