France, 1st half 19th century. Undated handwritten and signed letter by Lafayette in French on heavy rag paper. Signed lower right and frame with black and white engraving of the general in Colonial Army uniform, with battle scene in background.21"h. 13.5"w. Untranslated letter. 

Marquis de La Fayette was a French aristocrat and military officer who fought in the American Revolutionary War, commanding American troops in several battles, including the Siege of Yorktown. After returning to France, he was a key figure in the French Revolution of 1789 and the July Revolution of 1830. He has been considered a national hero in both countries.
