ANS signed “J. G. Blaine,” one page, 5 x 8, no date. Note to Mr. Smith, in full: "In 1878 I think it was a debate occurred on a proposition to dissolve the Negro Regiments—or to repeal the Law requiring enlistment of Negro regiment. Please find it for me." In very good to fine condition, with a tear to the center, and a small hole which affects nothing.
James Blaine (January 31, 1830 – January 27, 1893) was an American statesman and Republican politician who represented Maine in the United States House of Representatives from 1863 to 1876, serving as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1869 to 1875, and then in the United States Senate from 1876 to 1881. He served as Secretary of State under three presidents: Benjamin Harrison, James A. Garfield, and Chester A. Arthur.
