This is a fine early Robert E. Lee signed portion of a partially printed document signed by then Captain in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (and future Confederate General) Robert E. Lee. Small slip measuring 8" x 2.5", St. M. N. Davis & Co, dated May 7th, 1838. Signed "RE Lee Capt Engrs" under his certification on verso. The top of the voucher is headlined "The United States, Dr. to M. N. Davis & Co For the Improvement of the Harbor of St. Louis. In reference to the transportation of two boxes of Instruments from Baltimore to St. Louis. Fine signature.

This signed document also comes is also framed with an original Confederate stamped envelope with a Jefferson Davis Stamp.

Robert E. Lee (1807-1870) Prior to becoming the Civil War General and president of Lee University he served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during his early military career. Between 1834-1837, he was an assistant in the chief engineer's office in Washington, D.C. before moving on, as first lieutenant, to a construction project at St. Louis harbor and its conjunction with the Mississippi and Missouri Riverheads. He was promoted to captain in part for his work mapping the Des Moines rapids.
